Tracking mountain gorillas in their natural habitat has to be one of the most awe-inspiring travel experiences on our planet; and when combined with game viewing across the vast plains of the Serengeti, amidst the greatest wildlife migration on earth, you are truly undertaking a safari of a lifetime!
Led by two expert hosts, Sarah Hoyland of The Classic
Safari Company and Andrea Powis of Travelling
Divas, 'Wild at Heart' is a handcrafted 15 day safari from Uganda’s misty volcanic heights to the game
rich reserves of Northern Tanzania. Travelling with a small group of likeminded ladies we will venture from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to
track magnificent mountain gorillas and meet the fascinating Batwa (pygmy) tribe, before flying south to Tanzania to view Africa’s famed ‘Big Five’ and explore the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s ultimate Eden &
largest intact caldera teeming with game. The magical Spice Island of Zanzibar beckons as an optional
extension & a fitting end to this authentic East African adventure!
Combining spectacular wildlife viewing, extraordinary landscapes and truly enriching cultural immersions whilst staying in stunning tented camps and lodges,
this is truly a once in a lifetime safari!
Welcome to Uganda! On arrival in Entebbe you will be met and transferred to the newly renovated No. 5 Boutique Hotel. Enjoy the pool and gardens before gathering for sundowners to meet your fellow 'Wild at Heart' travellers.
Transfer to the airport for an early domestic flight to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you will stay at the eco-friendly Buhoma Lodge for three nights. After settling in to the lodge we will embark on a hike in the rain forest with local
Batwa guides. The Batwa pygmies will reveal how they once lived & hunted whilst teaching us about medicinal plants and pointing out the
abundant birdlife. A welcome dinner will be hosted this evening and we will be given a gorilla tracking briefing ready for tomorrow.
We will depart from the lodge first thing and assemble at the Park HQ to meet our gorilla trackers & National Park Guide. Carrying a packed lunch we will set off into the forest in search of the magnificent mountain gorillas. Porters are available to assist you if required. Once we have located a family of gorillas we will have one hour to spend in their company, witnessing them interacting with each other. We will then retrace our steps and return to the lodge for a celebratory dinner as we relive the incredible experience of today!
Today you have the opportunity to undertake a second gorilla trek. This is at additional cost and must be pre-booked so please advise if you
wish to purchase an additional permit. Those who elect not to trek again will be invited to join the Bwindi Local Community Village Walk
and visit a local homestead, Womens' Collective, traditional healer, banana brewery and the Mukono Primary School. Those who trek to see
the gorillas will be able to rejoin the group through the afternoon.
Depart Bwindi after breakfast bound for Kihihi Airstrip. En route visit two Ishasha Community Projects ‐ Deo's farm and Agartha's homestead ‐ both run by inspiring local people who will give a unique insight into everyday life, growing crops and providing for a family in rural Uganda. We'll take the short flight back to Entebbe, then check back into the No. 5 Boutique Hotel for one night. The remainder of the afternoon and evening will be at leisure.
A private transfer will take you back to the airport where you will board a flight to the Serengeti, Tanzania. On arrival you will be collected
and driven to our luxury safari camp - Kaskaz Mara Camp in the northern Serengeti.
Your wildlife experience will begin immediately with game viewing en route, followed by sunset drinks.
Game drives, balloon rides and walking safaris are all options available from Kaskaz Mara Camp over two full days. Our unique location allows us to experience the extensive wildlife in the northern Serengeti first hand from giraffes, zebra & migrating wildebeest to pangolins, porcupines and predators, we are surrounded by astonishing creatures! Kaskaz Mara Camp is just a short drive from the exciting Mara River viewing area, a prime spot to watch herds of blue wildebeest plunge into the infamously perilous Mara River as the migrate to find fresh grass and give birth. The crossings are full of adrenalin and make for some heart stopping sightings but cannot be guaranteed since exact timings are notoriously difficult to predict.
Today we take a quick flight to Ehlane Plains Camp, established in the
far eastern plains of the Serengeti in a remote and wildlife-filled pocket of the savannah. We will spend two days here with activities
centred on 4WD game viewing, guided walking and hot air ballooning. Ballooning must be must be pre-booked so please advise if you would
like to fly! Experienced guides will interpret the ecosystem for us and the presence of the Ngare Nanyuki watercourse ensures that there
is wildlife around all year. Predator sightings around the kopjes are usually sensational, especially lions, cheetahs and leopards.
Depart the Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge ‐ home to Louis & Mary Leakey’s famous discoveries of early humans ‐ before driving up
to the Ngorongoro Highlands. Arriving in the late afternoon we'll check in to Mandhari Lodge nestled between two iconic destinations
in northern Tanzania - the world famous Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park.
Relax by the pool, indulge in a massage, go bird spotting, explore on foot with a guide or head to the local Maasai market - today is a day
Today will be dedicated to the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Dubbed the 'eighth natural wonder of the world' the Ngorongoro Conservation Area boasts
some of the best wildlife viewing on the planet with a number of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhino, thousands of herbivores and prolific
populations of predators including lion and cheetah. Flamingos can also be seen feeding at Makat soda lake. A true spectacle!
Departing Mandhari Lodge we will descend to the shore of Lake Manyara to visit Esilalei Village and the local school before continuing our road journey to Arusha and checking in to Arusha Coffee Lodge, set amongst the grounds of Tanzania’s largest coffee plantation. You may wish to join a coffee tour or enjoy a rest by the pool before our final group dinner tonight hosted in the main Plantation House.
There will be time this morning for a leisurely breakfast with the option of some last minute shopping before we are privately transferred to the airport. If you are not continuing to Zanzibar, begin your journey home or continue with your onward arrangements.
If you will be joining us for the extension to Zanzibar you will take a quick flight to the island, check into Fumba Beach Lodge and enjoy a restful afternoon at leisure.
Spend a glorious three days on the exotic spice island of Zanzibar snorkelling, diving, cruising, relaxing on the beach and indulging in the hotel's spa treatments. You will have the opportunity to join a privately guided walking tour of Stone Town, exploring narrow doorways, huge carved doorways and the city's ancient Arabic culture. On the final day you will be privately transferred to the airport to begin your journey home.
Thank you for joining us on this fabulous safari.
