This adventure is the challenge of a lifetime. Join us to tackle Kilimanjaro and stand triumphant on the ‘roof of Africa’, followed by some well deserved R&R and a touch of luxury in Zanzibar in true Secret Women’s Series style.
There are various routes up Kilimanjaro but we’ve selected the Machame Route, known for its superior scenery, incredible views and variety of landscapes. It is not for the faint hearted, since the climb will be challenging, even for seasoned hikers, but no part of the route requires technical climbing skills and the exhilaration and pride will be worth every step up. As a point of difference from standard itineraries, we’ve included an extra day on the mountain to assist with acclimatisation, which will give us the best chance of summit success.
Our journey begins with two nights in a beautiful lodge set in rambling gardens on the slopes of Mount Meru - the perfect place to acclimatise before tackling Africa's highest mountain. Transferring to the Machame Gate our hike begins and over the next seven days we will take in dense rainforest, swathes of Proteas and Erica flowers, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, ancient glacier ice, volcanic relics, rocky lunar landscapes and a surprising amount of wildlife including Black and White Colobus Monkeys and Blue Monkeys. We’ll cut through the “Garden of the Senecios”, which features many huge senecio and lobelia plants, cross the Great Barranco Wall at an altitude of 4,420 m and walk beneath Breach Wall, the largest ice and rock face in all of Africa. To summit we’ll ascend Stella Point on top of the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest peak of Kilimanjaro at a monumental 5,895 metres above sea level. What a feeling!
To round off our journey we’ll head to Zanzibar to spend three nights in tropical paradise. Staying in a luxurious beachhouse-style hotel in a secluded spot on the Northwestern coast of Zanzibar, we’ll swim and snorkel in turquoise waters, dine on freshly landed game fish and exotic spices, explore the island’s rich trading history and indulge in a spa treatment or two as we relax and recharge in style.
This journey will mark a lifetime achievement. Join us to take on Africa’s highest peak with the camaraderie and support of a small group of like-minded female travellers and realise the ambition of a lifetime.
