The intriguing ancient cultures, dramatic landscapes and iconic wildlife of Namibia make it a photographic wonderland. The intensity of colour and the pureness of the light here provide an inspiring environment in which to hone your photographic skills with journey host acclaimed fine art photographer, Len Metcalf.
This unique, one off 12-day itinerary will take in Namibia’s extraordinary diversity providing the opportunity to witness and photograph unique desert adapted animals, ancient tribal history and arid desertscapes. Throughout the safari you will travel in a small group of just eight participants in a specially adapted 4WD vehicle offering each photographer their own window for unhindered shooting and immediate access to Len’s supportive teaching.
Beginning in Windhoek you’ll experience the incongruity of a cosmopolitan African city dotted with cathedral spires and German architecture before heading out to Damaraland where you will learn the complex nature of wildlife and landscape photography. During this time Len will discuss and demonstrate various approaches including techniques for focusing and framing a beautiful shot, colour theory and the visual language of black and white photography. From here you will continue to the fasincating Twyfelfontein area, scattered with surreal geological landforms and relics of an ancient history, before heading north to Kaokoland, home to both the Himba and Herero people. Here you will have the opportunity to meet and interact with the locals as you perfect your portrait photography. Your journey will come to an end in Etosha National Park where you will capture rare desert adapted wildlife including elephant, oryx and ostrich. You will have plenty to time to practise the techniques learnt and enjoy further individual assistance from Len as you explore the area on a number of games drives.
This unique journey teaches you how to see photographically - how to look beyond the snapshot and produce fine art photographs. Set in one of the world’s most visually stimulating environments, this is not just another photographic tour but top notch safari and carefully constructed learning experience. You will be challenged and inspired on a daily basis, producing an impressive portfolio of exquisite images as the colours and landscapes of Namibia etch their lasting impression on your lens.
Depart Australia bound for Windhoek (via Johannesburg), where you will be met by Len and your guide and transferred to your hotel.
Head to the wide open plains to Spitzkoppe to discover and photograph mountains, bushmen paintings, unique biodiversity and bizarrely sculpted rocks
including the famous rock arch. Enjoy full-day comprehensive photography workshops with Len including sunrise and sunset shoots.
Drive to Damaraland. Visit the Twyfelfontein rock engravings as well as the interesting Organ Pipes rock formations and Burnt Mountain.
Head north to Opuwo in Kaokoland, home to a range of different tribes including the Himba and Herero. Visit local villages to interact with and photograph these enigatic people whilst learning key portraiture skills.
Head to Etosha arriving late in the afternoon.
Explore Etosha photographing dramatic landscapes and a whole host of rare, desert-adapted wildlife under Len's tutelage.
Time for a morning game drive before heading back to Windhoek. Share a farewell dinner with the group.
Depart Windhoek to begin your journey home or continue with your onward arrangements.
