Jodhpur, Jaisalmer & surrounds
The bustling desert city of Jodhpur stands at the edge of the Thar Desert and was the citadel of the ancient Marwar kingdom. It is the second largest city in Rajasthan after Jaipur and is known as the 'Blue City' due to the vivid blue-painted houses that surround the mammoth imposing Meherangarh Fort that dominates the skyline. Perched on a 150m hill its sprawl creates the most formidable and magnificent fort in Rajasthan. For a splendid example of Indo-colonial architecture be sure to visit the exquisite Umaid Bhawan Palace.
Further into the great Thar Desert lies the city of Jaisalmer - a paragon of beautiful culture and harsh climatic conditions, which together leave a lasting
impression. Jaisalmer Fort, known as the Golden Fort, rises from the sand and merges with the golden hues of the desert giving it a fairytale
appearance. A camel ride in the nearby Sam Sand Dunes is a must, along with a meander through the main market, Sadar Bazaar.
