Caiman Ecological Refuge: Baiazinha Lodge
Wildlife and culture of the Pantanal
Situated on a 53,000 hectare cattle ranch in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, the Caiman Ecological Refuge is a pioneer in ecotourism in the Southern Pantanal. It is actively involved with environmental research and conservation projects including the Hyacinth Macaw Project and Blue-Fronted Parrot Project, all done through partnerships with researchers and universities.
Baiazinha Lodge is one of two lodges within the refuge. Built on stilts it sits on the banks of a clear-water lake and has six standard rooms with balconies overlooking a west-facing inlet of the lake to make the most of the stunning wetland sunsets. The rooms are decorated in a traditional ranch style with pure cotton sheets and sumptuous down-filled pillows while the living area of the lodge and dining room for 12 people offer a cosy and inviting space to share tales from the day. Outside there is a deck and pool area with comfortable hammocks swinging gently in the breeze, framed by the lake and the vast Pantanal landscape.
There are a huge number of activities to be undertaken here including ecological tours, photographic safaris, canoe trips, night walks, astronomy workshops and insights into the jaguar programme. Biking, birdwatching and boat trips on the Aquidauana River can all also be arranged. Staying at the Caiman Ecological Refuge is a fantastic opportunity to support a pioneering ecological cause whilst also enjoying the indulgence of a luxury lodge.
Baiazina Lodge provides the perfect base for experiencing the adventure of the Brazilian wilderness while also offering the perfect sanctuary for relaxing in the beauty and tranquility of nature.

May through October is the driest time of year and the ideal time for fauna sightings. We do not recommend visiting November through February as the heat and rain is too intense, with 70% of the regions rain falling during these months. The intermediary seasons, April-June and October-November are changeable.
