Journalist Tales from the deepest, darkest...
Misty mountains, steamy jungles & the 'other' migration

Award winning journalists, Sue Williams and Catherine Marshall (The Australian, Traveller, Sydney Morning Herald) are now back from their travels and bursting to share their stories. Join us for one or both of our information evenings to hear all about their experiences and learn more about travel to these remarkable destinations.

Every year, the Southern Serengeti hosts thousands upon thousands of wildebeest as they gather to give birth, and we sent Sue Williams to witness the phenomenon. This movement of wildlife has been dubbed ‘the other migration’ and unlike the famous river crossings of the Northern Serengeti, it is virtually unknown. Standing among immense herds, surrounded for miles in every direction and deafened by comical grunting, you’ll witness the birth of new life before your eyes and the heart-stopping drama of intense predator activity. The best part? Except for the local Hadzabe tribe there’s no one else here. No one.

Moving into the shadowy African interior we sent Catherine Marshall, deep into gorilla country. Few have trodden the Republic of Congo’s primary jungles which are home to forest elephant, bongos, butterflies and several groups of western lowland gorilla. Half of the world's wild mountain gorillas live on the misty Rwandan slopes of the Virungas, and a trip to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest could see you sitting amongst a habituated gorilla family group one day and tracking chimpanzees with a group of researchers the next.

Tips for travelling in Tanzania, Africa   Africa's newest safari frontier
What to do when you come across a dangerous animal   Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

If an angry bull elephant tilts its head back, flaps its ears and then thunders towards you, keep your cool, our guide instructs us. Don't run, don't hide and definitely don't fall on your knees and pray.

Instead, stand still, look him right in the eye, hold your ground and shout at him. Shout at him? Shout at a huge, three-tonne creature coming at you full tilt in the faint hope you'll scare him?

The woman next to me leaps to her feet. "Oh my God!" she yells. "Look!"

The Landcruiser crunches to a sudden halt and, heart pounding, I turn in the direction she's pointing. I expect to see a leopard climbing a tree in pursuit of a baboon, an elephant bathing its baby or at least a lion lying flat in the high grasses, stalking an unwary impala lamb. But there's nothing...
