Tanzania is home to two of East Africa's most famous national parks - the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Accessed from Kenya, a five hour drive from Nairobi to Arusha, this northern belt of Tanzania provides a unique safari experience - open plains, flat-topped acacia trees, abundant wildlife - the very essence of Africa!
Whilst these parks attract many visitors, Tanzania also boasts remote, wild parks such as the vast Selous, the virtually untouched Katavi and the tiny Gombe Stream chimpanzee sanctuary on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Tanzania is also home to Africa's highest peak - Kilimanjaro (5895m), and the exotic Indian Ocean Island of Zanzibar - the Travellers' Mecca of the '60s. With white sandy beaches, reefs to snorkel, a labyrinth of rambling streets in Stone Town, spice markets and Persian ruins, Zanzibar is still a great place to discover!
Highlights:
- Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater
- Kilimanjaro
- Selous, Ruaha, Katavi
- Mahale Mountains & The Chimps
- Zanzibar
Getting there: Fly from Victoria Falls or Johannesburg
Best time: January - March, June - October
Combine with: Kenya & Zimbabwe
