Top notch, hand picked, the best in the game
The guides who deliver safaris with punch

When you go on safari, or indeed on any wilderness journey, you need a guide. We know that. But what’s in a guide?

As travellers ourselves we know the value of great guides – they’re the ones that take you where the locals go, show you things no tourist ever sees, find the hidden treasure that piques the interest and surprises even the most hardened traveller or seasoned safari-goer.

But what about a truly exceptional guide? What about the one that is so intimately entwined in the bush that they know yellow billed kites signal summer on the way and can distinguish the reed frog from the warbler? The one who identifies each elephant’s footsteps by the cracks in her feet and who converses freely with its people in the tribal consonant clicks inaccessible to most? The ones who are charming, intelligent, engaging and endlessly entertaining?

These are not JUST guides. They are expert hosts, teachers and custodians of their land who take pride in sharing their knowledge of its time-honoured secrets.

Beks Ndlovu
Zimbabwe

Hwange born and raised, highly educated, the proud creator of a community and conservation support group and the founder of a successful portfolio of luxury camps, Beks is the face of Zimbabwean success. He won ‘Best Personal contribution to Safari Tourism in Africa' and ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the Zimbabwe Council for Tourism Awards and is actively involved in the recruiting and training of new guides. He still guides private groups and with over 20 years of experience under his belt Beks is THE authority on Zim!

David Foot
Horseback Botswana

Known affectionately as ‘The Feet’, Robyn and David Foot have journeyed through wild regions of Africa for fifty years - the Kafue and South Luangwa in Zambia, the Matusadona and Mana Pools in Zimbabwe and the Nyika National Park in Malawi. Botswana is their home and the setting for their stunning horseback safaris. Here the grassy plains, glittering delta and lunar saltpan landscapes boast some of the highest concentrations of bird and wildlife on the continent and good ground for endless gallops…

Ralph Bousfield
Botswana

Ralph comes from a long line of African pioneers and his family have guided safaris for four generations. From his early childhood he was surrounded by Zu/’hoasi Bushmen, speaking their complicated click-based language, exploring the Kalahari and learning from them how to track and hunt. He's been in Botswana all his life, established four luxury camps and has dedicated himself to knowing all there is to know about it's people, it's fauna, it's flora and it's ancient past. He is one of the best (and most charming) guides of the Africa of old.

Gordie Church
Horseback Kenya

Gordie is the son of Tony Church, who pioneered the concept of horseback riding safaris in big game country in the 1970s. From a young age he mastered the idiosyncratic skills of safari - putting up tents, packing trucks and saddling horses with the crew. Endlessly knowledgeable, completely at one with the bush, a skilled horseman and fluent in Swahili, Gordie heads up horseback safaris through Kenya’s iconic Masai land alongside his talented equestrian wife Felicia.

Roger Dugmore
Botswana

The Dugmore name is well known throughout Africa and Roger is one of the most sought after guides in Botswana. His story began when Jack Bousfield (father of Ralph above) offered him a position trapping birds and from there brilliant minds came together to form several iconic safari operations. Roger Dugmore Safaris is in keeping with the original mobile safari, moving where the action is, unrushed and imparting extensive knowledge of some of the most striking areas in Botswana.

Howard Saunders
East Africa-wide

Howard is one of our own – an Aussie! He has travelled the length and breadth of Africa, guiding professionally in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. He set up an Outdoor Education Program for African children, conducts safari 'field trips' for undergraduate students, is a director of a conservation management company, sits on the board of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association and still finds time to guide for the lucky few!
