This little country has a privileged climate and splendid landscapes. It is geographically divided into three regions: the coast, the highlands and the rainforest.
Along the coast the most important city is Guayaquil, the starting point for Ecuador's main attraction, the Galapagos Islands. These are geologically young and famed for their vast number of endemic species, which contributed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. These are better explored on a cruise lead by experts.
On the highlands, at almost 4000m above sea level, lies the capital of Ecuador, Quito, a very religious city. It is said that there are enough churches to visit a different one every day of the year. Surrounding the city there are many small towns and villages where the Incan culture is maintained. Visit the many busy and interesting markets such as those at Otavalo, Patate and Banos.
