Rio, Buzios & Costa Verde
With a jaw-dropping setting it’s no wonder Rio is one of the happiest and hippest cities in the world. There are the buzzing beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, jungle-clad mountains, the bohemian neighbourhood of Santa Teresa and the imposing Christ the Redeemer that stands guard over the city. Each year thousands flock to Rio to be part of the world’s biggest street party, Rio Carnival, famed for its spectacular processions as Samba through Sambodromo.
For those who want a more relaxed beach escape, head to beautiful Buzios, 2 ½ hours north of Rio. Once a simple fishing village, this now upscale paradise with more than 20 magnificent beaches, is dotted with boutiques, fine restaurants, villas and posh pousadas. Wander the cobblestone streets and picture postcard waterfront of this amoeba-shaped peninsular made famous by Bridget Bardot.
West of Rio is the glorious Costa Verde, a captivating stretch of coastline where mountains are blanketed in velvet green on one side and stunning beaches, bays and islands on the other. This 350-mile coast is rich in beauty and biodiversity. Spend time on the idyllic islands of Ilha Grande or Ilhabela or wander the cobblestone streets of Paratay, a beautifully preserved old Portuguese port town and possibly one of the romantic places on the world.
