Madikwe, Waterberg & Kalahari

Located in the North West Province, on the fringes of the Kalahari Desert, lies a unique terrain of vast savannahs and rocky outcrops - the Madikwe Game Reserve, the largest in all of South Africa.  This wildlife haven is home to Africa’s Big Five along with healthy, hunting packs of African Wild Dogs. To the east lies The Waterberg in the Limpopo Province. Ruggedly beautiful it features ancient mountains, archaeological sites and rolling savannahs that play host to an abundance of wildlife.  This is one of South Africa's best kept secrets offering private sanctuaries where you can explore on foot or horseback.  And to the north and west stretches the southern Kalahari, supporting more animals and plants than a true desert due to the small amount of rainfall it receives.  Ancient dry riverbeds traverse this large semi-arid sandy savannah and, after the rains, pools of water support an array of wildlife including sable, tsessebe, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, bat-eared fox, aardwolf and honey badgers.  The Madikwe, Waterberg and Southern Kalahari are all malaria-free, family-friendly destinations.
