With a coastline of more than 6000 kilometres, Chile is certainly one of the longest countries on the globe. From the southern tip of the continent to its northern border with Peru, it covers the most extreme climates in South America.
Starting your travels from the capital city Santiago, the three main destinations to visit form an almost perfect triangle:
Atacama in the north, considered the driest desert in the world, with its salt pans and geysers; Torres del Paine National Park, with mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers in the south of Patagonia; and more than 3500 km west of Chile, situated in the middle of the Pacific, the mysterious and unexplored Easter Island (or Rapa Nui, as it is locally known), declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its monumental statues (Moais).
Highlights
- Atacama desert
- Torres del Paine National Park
- Easter Island
Getting there
- Direct flights from Australia or Europe
Best time
- Year round, though Southern Patagonia best November – March
