Riding through the Spanish countryside is a rich journey of history, beautiful scenery, picture-perfect villages, warm locals, delicious food and excellent wine.

Our Spanish rides are operated by María Elena Dendaluce of ‘Equiberia’, a warm and inviting host who knows the customs, natural history and the culture of the Spanish regions she showcases like the back of her hand. She is passionate about the beauty and intrigue of these ancient, all-too-often forgotten regions of Spain and makes for a fantastic travel companion and captivating host.

A variety of itineraries of different lengths are available taking in different parts of Spain including Gredos, Segovia, Andalucia, Seville and Menorca. The extraordinary Gredos and Segovia ride combines 3 days riding in the province of Segovia with 3 days riding in the Sierra de Gredos; the historic centre and natural heart of Castile. Both provinces are in Central Spain, in the Meseta, the great high plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, in the region of Castilla y Leon.

The journey starts in the Sierra of Gredos Nature Park, where riders will beinspired by the landscapes full of light, colour and nature’s splendour. This area is truly rural Spain, with an economy based on free range Avilian cattle breeding. The small villages display their architecture, their traditions and the way of life of their people, isolated in this inaccessible nature that shapes their unique character. It is an excellent terrain for riding, mostly open fields with magnificent views and paths that follow the course of rivers.

The second part of the ride will take you to Segovia, a journey with many historic sites accessible on horseback, riding through the open and unspoiled Castilian countryside. Riders will visit the medieval city of Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage Town which boasts a colossal Roman Aqueduct from the 1st Century AD; and ride to the Romanesque church of Sotosalbos; the castle and fortified city of Pedraza; and the Royal site of La Granja de San Ildefonso, with its grand baroque palace and beautiful gardens.

The quality of the accommodation is outstanding, with all the hotels in great locations and carefully selected for their authenticity and character. The trip also caters extremely well for non-riders offering a programme of history, gastronomy & wines, astronomy, walking & birdwatching.

Travelling with Maria Elena offers an insightful journey through the simple goodness of life in rural Spain. This is the perfect trip for anyone looking to combine good food and wine, ancient history, rich cultural heritage and the opportunity to ride some of the world’s most supremely beautiful horses.
