Africa’s largest saltpan, Etosha, is the result of a geological shift that dramatically changed the course of the Kunene River, away from where the pans are today.  The pans, 120 km across and 55km from north to south, were formerly an ancient lake.  Today the Pan is mostly bone dry, the stark, parched white surface giving the Pan its Herero name‘Great White Place’.

Originally part of the greater Etosha Game Reserve, Onguma Game Reserve is one of Namibia’s best kept secrets.  It is situated on the eastern side of Etosha, bordering Fisher’s pan.The Reserve covers an area of over 34 000ha and incorporates ecological substrata such as savannah, bushveld, omuramba and dry pan.Age-old and well-worn migration routes, once used by elephant and buffalo wander through Onguma’s three dry riverbeds.  The Reserve boasts over thirty different animal species.  Plains game, roam freely on the Reserve and predators although not easy to spot are nevertheless common residents of the area.  Lions are frequently seen and often heard.  There is a healthy black rhino and leopard population and hyenas are also often seen scavenging the area.

Onguma Tented Camp is an intimate small camp, ideal for romantics yearning for an under-canvas safari experience.  Accommodation consists of a fourteen bed tented camp, built around an active waterhole.  The seven spacious tents extend the u-shaped design, allowing for both privacy and fantastic views of the wildlife moving around the camp.  The main guest area also overlooks the waterhole and includes a reception area, lounge, dining room as well as horizon swimming pool. Every comfort is attended to and the bush-chic styling ensures guests are cocooned in luxury.  Under-canvas romance abounds.
